Location & Transportation

I always love arriving in Vancouver—it’s easy to navigate and welcoming right from the start. The city is well-connected by road, and many visitors enjoy a scenic drive along Interstate 5 from nearby Portland. While there are several small inns and boutique hotels in town, many cruise passengers also choose to return to their ship or book a day excursion. The closest major airport is Portland International Airport, just a short drive away, making regional travel a breeze.

Sightseeing

Vancouver’s history and natural beauty are perfect for a day of exploration. A few of my favorite spots include:

  • Fort Vancouver National Historic Site: Step back in time at this landmark that played a key role in the Pacific Northwest’s development.
  • Pearson Air Museum: Discover fascinating aviation history and get a glimpse of the local heritage.
  • Clark County Historical Museum: Enjoy exhibits that tell the story of the region’s past and its diverse cultural roots.

Take a leisurely stroll along the river or explore the local parks to enjoy scenic views of the Columbia River.

Tours & Excursions

There’s no shortage of adventures to be had. A few excursions I always recommend are:

  • Columbia River Gorge Tour: Drive along this stunning natural wonder to see breathtaking waterfalls and rugged cliffs.
  • Mount Hood Adventures: Depending on the season, you can enjoy skiing and snowboarding in winter or hiking and biking in summer.
  • Lewis and Clark Trail: Follow in the footsteps of these famous explorers and learn about their remarkable journey.
  • Bonneville Dam & Mount St. Helens: For those with a taste for adventure, guided tours to these nearby attractions offer unique insights into regional natural and industrial heritage.

Shopping

Vancouver has a charming mix of local boutiques and specialty markets. I love browsing small shops that feature handcrafted goods and locally produced foods. The weekly Vancouver Farmers Market is a must-visit if you’re looking for fresh produce, artisanal items, and an authentic slice of local life.

Dining

The dining scene here is as diverse as it is inviting. Whether you’re in the mood for hearty Pacific Northwest cuisine or a light café meal, Vancouver’s eateries have something for everyone. Some of my personal favorites include:

  • Local restaurants serving fresh seafood and locally sourced ingredients.
  • Cozy coffee shops perfect for a relaxing afternoon break.
  • Craft breweries where you can sample regional brews and soak up the friendly atmosphere.

Culture & Local Events

Vancouver is bursting with cultural charm and local traditions. Here’s what makes the local scene so special:

Local Events

  • Vancouver Farmers Market: Not only a great place for shopping, but also a hub for community events and live music.
  • Summer Concert Series: Enjoy live music performances outdoors—a perfect way to spend a warm evening.
  • Regular festivals and local gatherings that celebrate the rich history and diverse culture of the Pacific Northwest.

A few practical tips: Tipping is customary in the United States, typically around 15-20% at restaurants and for many services. Local business hours are usually in sync with standard American times, with many shops and attractions open from mid-morning until early evening.

Safety & Awareness

  • In case of emergencies, dial 911.
  • Always keep a copy of your identification and travel documents handy.
  • Enjoy the friendly and safe atmosphere, but it’s always good to stay aware of your surroundings as you explore.
