Location & Transportation

When you arrive in Linz, you'll dock along Donau Park—a charming spot just a 15-minute walk from the heart of downtown. I love that the port area makes it easy to start your adventure on foot. The city is very walkable, and local trams can take you further afield if you want to explore more of Linz’s hidden corners.

Sightseeing

Linz is bursting with culture and history around every corner. Here are some of my favorite spots:

  • Linz Castle: Perched on a hill above the city, this medieval castle offers stunning views and a peek into the past.
  • Ars Electronica Center: An interactive museum blending art, technology, and society. It’s a must-see, especially if you love modern innovation.
  • Lentos Art Museum: This museum of modern art features works by both Austrian and international artists. It’s a real treat for art lovers.
  • Pöstlingberg: Take a ride on the historic tram to this hilltop area and enjoy panoramic views of Linz—it’s a bit out of the center but well worth the journey.

Tours & Excursions

For those with a bit more time to explore beyond the city center:

  • Engelhartszell: A delightful small town known for its beautiful surroundings and the charming Engelhartszell Castle.
  • Passau: Known as “the city of three rivers,” Passau is a picturesque town where the Danube, Inn, and Ilz meet. This excursion offers a wonderful contrast to the urban vibe of Linz.

Shopping

I enjoy wandering through Linz’s shopping districts, where modern stores mix with quaint local boutiques:

  • Stroll along the pedestrian zones around the Hauptplatz and along Landstraße where you can find unique souvenirs and local specialties.
  • Browse through local artisan shops that capture the charm of Austrian craftsmanship.

Dining

Linz offers a delightful culinary scene that mirrors its blend of tradition and modernity:

  • Enjoy a meal in one of the many riverside restaurants, where you can savor Austrian dishes as well as international fare.
  • Be sure to try local treats like the famous Linzer Torte in one of the cozy cafés.
  • The city’s vibrant café culture is perfect for a relaxed coffee break and some people-watching.

Culture & Local Events

Linz is not just about beautiful sights—it’s alive with local culture and events that add a special flavor to your visit:

  • Local Life & Practical Tips:
    • The local currency is the Euro (EUR). While most places accept credit cards, it’s always a good idea to have a bit of cash on hand, especially in smaller shops or cafes.
    • Shops, museums, and attractions generally open around 10:00 am and close by early evening. Weekends and holidays might see slightly different hours, so check locally if you can.
  • Festivals & Events:
    • The Ars Electronica Festival is a highlight for visitors interested in digital arts and innovation—it usually takes place every September.
    • Throughout the year, various local events and street festivals add to Linz’s lively atmosphere, giving you a true taste of Austrian culture.
  • Safety & Awareness:
    • Linz is a friendly and safe city. As with any popular tourist destination, it’s wise to stay aware of your surroundings and keep an eye on your belongings, especially in busy areas.
