Location & Transportation
Kampen is a gem nestled along the river IJssel in the province of Overijssel. I’ve loved exploring its narrow cobblestone streets and peaceful canals, which have been the lifeblood of the city for centuries. When you arrive, you’ll feel as though you’ve stepped back in time, with medieval and Renaissance buildings proudly lining the waterways.
Nearby Lodging
If you decide to stay overnight or for a few extra hours, you’ll find a number of cozy guesthouses, small hotels, and charming bed and breakfasts in the historic center. Many places offer intimate settings with a real local feel—perfect if you want to wake up to the serene views of Kampen’s canals.
Nearest Airport
Kampen doesn’t have its own commercial airport, so most visitors fly into Amsterdam Schiphol Airport, which is about a 90-minute drive away. Alternatively, you might consider flying into Zwolle Airport for regional connections, then enjoy a scenic drive or train ride into Kampen.
Sightseeing
Walking through Kampen is like leafing through a history book—with so much to see at every corner! Here are some of my personal favorites:
- Historic City Centre: Wander through narrow streets surrounded by well-preserved medieval and Renaissance-era buildings.
- Grote or St. Nicolaaskerk: This stunning Gothic church, dating back to the 13th century, is a must-see for its history and architecture.
- Charming Canals: Enjoy a leisurely stroll along the canals and take in the picturesque views of the city’s unique layout.
- Local Parks & Gardens: Take a peaceful break in one of Kampen’s green spaces that offer a quiet retreat from the bustling historic center.
Tours & Excursions
There’s plenty to do if you’re looking to explore beyond the streets of Kampen:
- Walking Tours: Join a guided tour to learn the fascinating stories behind Kampen’s ancient walls and hidden alleyways.
- Boat Tours: Set off on a boat excursion along the IJssel River and see the city from a new perspective.
- Nature Excursions: For a breath of fresh air, consider a bike or walking tour to the nearby Weerribben-Wieden National Park, where nature and tranquility await.
- Festival Fun: If you happen to visit during the summer, the Kampen Summer Festival fills the streets with live music, food stalls, and local culture that's not to be missed.
Shopping
Kampen offers a delightful shopping experience that’s perfect for picking up unique Dutch souvenirs:
- Stroll through local boutiques and antique shops where you can discover handcrafted items and traditional Dutch crafts.
- Visit the local market to browse fresh produce, artisanal goods, and handmade gifts that capture the spirit of the region.
Dining
When it comes to food, Kampen does not disappoint:
- Enjoy hearty Dutch cuisine in intimate cafés and family-run restaurants.
- Dine along the canals where many eateries offer a blend of traditional dishes and modern twists.
- Whether it’s fresh local fish, seasonal produce, or a savory Dutch pancake, the local dining scene is both casual and delicious.
Culture & Local Events
Kampen’s charm isn’t just in its history—it’s in its vibrant cultural scene and local traditions.
Local Events
- Kampen Summer Festival: This lively annual event brings together music, food stalls, and community activities. It’s a fantastic way to experience local life at its most festive.
- Throughout the year, you might also stumble upon art exhibitions, open-air concerts, and heritage celebrations in the town’s historic squares.
Remember, while the local language is Dutch, you’ll find that many locals working in tourism speak English. Most shops and restaurants follow traditional operating hours, so it’s a good idea to check ahead if you’re planning to visit a specific spot. And even though most places accept credit cards, having some cash on hand (in Euros) can be handy.
Safety & Awareness
- Kampen is a very welcoming and safe city. As with any travel destination, it helps to keep an eye on your belongings in crowded areas.
- In case of any emergencies, dial 112—standard throughout the Netherlands.
