- Regular trains and buses from Brussels, Antwerp, and other nearby cities make it simple to plan a day trip.
- If you need a place to stay, Ghent offers a range of hotels, guesthouses, and apartments scattered throughout the city.
- For those flying in, Brussels Airport is the nearest major airport, about a 45- to 50-minute drive away.

Dining
One of my favorite parts of visiting Ghent is its delicious cuisine. Local dining is all about hearty Belgian fare and friendly service:
- Be sure to try traditional dishes like moules-frites (mussels with fries) and waffles.
- Enjoy a leisurely meal in one of the local bistros or brasseries where outdoor terraces let you soak up the atmosphere.
- Pair your meal with one of Belgium’s famous beers for a true taste of local flavor.
- Ask locals for their favorite spots—there’s always a hidden gem waiting to be discovered!
Culture & Local Events
Ghent is not only steeped in history but also full of lively local traditions and events that make every visit special:
Local Events
- Festivals: Keep an eye out for the Gentse Feesten, a huge citywide festival with music, theatre, and street performances usually held in July.
- Markets and Seasonal Fairs: The city hosts regular markets and fair events that showcase local art, crafts, and food specialties.
- Cultural Venues: Local theatres and galleries often have exhibitions and performances that capture the spirit of Ghent.
Safety & Awareness
- Like in any popular tourist destination, always watch your belongings, especially in crowded areas.
- Most shops and attractions operate on standard business hours (usually opening around 10 am and closing by 6 pm), though many restaurants and cafés stay open later.
- In case of emergency, the local emergency number is 112.
I always find that a day in Ghent is a wonderful blend of history, art, and vibrant local life—perfect for a memorable stop on any river cruise.
