Location & Transportation
Chau Doc is wonderfully accessible by road and river. As you approach the port, you will find that local transportation options—from taxis to private boat hires—make it easy to explore the area. If you’re looking for a comfortable place to rest, I recommend checking out the local guesthouses or enjoying a stay at the Victoria Hotel, which not only offers lodging but also features a rooftop panoramic spa open from 9 am to 9 pm.
For those arriving by air, Chau Doc itself has a small domestic airstrip, but most international travelers use Tan Son Nhat International Airport in Ho Chi Minh City (SGN), which is about a four-hour drive away.
Tours & Excursions
There’s no shortage of adventures when you’re in Chau Doc! A must-do activity is to hire a boat and cruise along the Bassac River. On a typical boat tour, you might:
- Enjoy a relaxing trip starting near the Victoria Hotel, where you can even take a break for an exotic massage at the rooftop spa.
- Visit Long Khanh Island via a private roundtrip boat excursion.
- Glide past the Vĩnh Te Canal and explore the lush beauty of the Tra Su Cajuput Forest, a true ecological treasure.
In addition to the boat tours, here are some popular excursions that I’ve found truly memorable:
- Sam Mountain: Climb this gentle hill to visit pagodas like the Lady Chua Xu Temple and soak in panoramic views of the surrounding countryside.
- Tra Su Bird Sanctuary: Ideal for nature lovers, this sanctuary is a haven for a wide array of bird species including herons, storks, and egrets.
- Ba Chuc Massacre Memorial: A poignant site dedicated to remembering the victims of past tragedies, offering a deep dive into local history.
- An Giang Province: Venture out to admire the rich rural landscapes, with its sprawling rice paddies and charming ethnic minority villages.
- Floating Markets: Don’t miss an early morning boat ride to experience the bustling local floating markets, where farmers sell fresh produce right from their boats.
Shopping
Chau Doc’s markets are full of life and local flavor. As you meander through the town, you’ll find:
- Bustling local markets where you can pick up handicrafts, traditional textiles, and unique souvenirs.
- Small shops and roadside stands offering everything from fresh tropical fruits to locally produced spices. Enjoy the friendly banter with vendors—it’s all part of the authentic Mekong Delta experience.
Dining
The culinary scene in Chau Doc reflects its rich cultural heritage and the abundance of fresh river produce. Some of my personal favorites include:
- Sampling local specialties like fresh fish noodle soup and other Mekong Delta dishes at a riverside eatery.
- Enjoying the mix of Vietnamese and Khmer flavors, which come alive in small local restaurants.
- Dining al fresco at one of the many street-side stalls, where the aroma of grilled seafood and exotic spices will lure you in for a taste of authentic local cuisine.
Culture & Local Events
Chau Doc offers a warm and welcoming culture that blends traditional Vietnamese customs with the unique influences of the Mekong Delta region. Here’s what you need to know:
- The local currency is the Vietnamese Dong (VND) and while modern establishments often accept cards, carrying cash is recommended in smaller venues.
- Vietnamese is the language spoken here. Even a few basic greetings in Vietnamese can help you connect with the locals.
- Local businesses and markets tend to open early, so mornings are the best time to experience the vibrant energy of the floating markets.
- When visiting temples like those on Sam Mountain, remember to dress modestly as a sign of respect.
- Throughout the year, you might catch local festivals celebrating the rich culture of the Mekong Delta. These events showcase traditional music, dance, and food—be sure to check local listings for current happenings!
- Always remain aware of your surroundings, particularly in busy market areas. Local police are friendly and helpful if you need assistance.
